How updates are checked →Born abroad with foreign nationality at birth, including people who later became French citizens. Every origin percentage below uses all INSEE immigrants in France as its denominator.
| Birthplace | Immigrants | Share of all immigrants |
|---|---|---|
| Africa | 3,923,200 | 49.2% |
| Europe | 2,414,300 | 30.3% |
| Asia | 1,140,500 | 14.3% |
| Americas and Oceania | 491,600 | 6.2% |
| Birthplace | Immigrants | Share of all immigrants |
|---|---|---|
| Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia) | 2,333,400 | 29.3% |
| Africa outside the Maghreb | 1,589,800 | 19.9% |
The Maghreb here is Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. “Africa outside the Maghreb” includes other North African countries, so it is neither West Africa nor exactly sub-Saharan Africa. These figures do not count descendants born in France.
Detailed African birthplace groups
| Birthplace | Immigrants | Share of all immigrants |
|---|---|---|
| Sahel (INSEE classification) | 429,700 | 5.4% |
| Guinean or Central Africa (INSEE classification) | 643,900 | 8.1% |
| Comoros and Madagascar | 269,700 | 3.4% |
| Remaining African countries | 246,500 | 3.1% |
Sahel and Guinean or Central Africa follow INSEE’s TeO2 grouping, not the West Africa boundary.
INSEE changed census collection in 2024. Values before 2024 are not directly comparable with 2024–2025; the apparent increase across that break is not a measure of immigration growth.

Residents of France born abroad with foreign nationality at birth, including those who subsequently acquired French nationality.
Calculation
Published INSEE percentage; denominator: All INSEE immigrants in France in 2025
Limitations
INSEE immigrants exclude people born abroad with French nationality at birth. Birthplace is not current citizenship, ethnicity or legal status. Figures are estimates; 2024 and 2025 are provisional. A census collection change creates a break between 2023 and 2024; levels across that break must not be interpreted as comparable growth. Imported the dated HTML tables. The linked workbook still contained older 2024 figures when retrieved and was excluded. Counts in this HTML are rounded to thousands; country shares to one decimal. Country rows are selected published countries, not an exhaustive country list. No counts are inferred from rounded shares.
Keep INSEE immigrants distinct from Eurostat foreign-born people. Never combine overlapping geographic groups or infer West Africa from all Africa. Published rounding can prevent exact reconciliation.
